Hippocrates once said that "All diseases begin in the gut". Surprisingly, the statement stands true to this day. As obesity becomes rampant as a result of lifestyle changes; unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles, brought about by the everchanging socio-economic landscape, metabolic syndrome becomes highly prevalent in adults as well as children but much so in Type 2 diabetic patients. This book aims to take the reader to understand the components of the disease and how obesity and insulin resistance play a significant proportion to its development. It further explores the idea of how intermittent fasting can be used as an intervention to mitigate or perhaps improve the condition of metabolic syndrome through the alteration of one or more of its components. This book is written for those who would like to have a cursory understanding of the dietary intervention itself as well as its effect on the disease. We have compiled all the relevant research data to keep the reader abreast of the current knowledge. We humbly hoped that the reader enjoys this piece of written effort and hopefully kick-starts to a much healthier way of living.

SYARIFAH AISYAH SYED ABD HALIM is a lecturer from the Department of Anatomy, UKM Medical Centre, 56000 Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. She obtained her medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Egypt. She had several years of working experience under the Ministry of Health. Subsequently, she decided to join the Department of Anatomy, UKM, and completed her Master's degree in Anatomy. Her area of expertise is human anatomy, while her research area is in the field of the cardiovascular system. MUHAMMAD LUQMAN NASARUDDIN is a lecturer from the Department of Biochemistry, UKM Medical Centre, 56000 Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. He graduated with a Degree in Biotechnology, specializing in microbiology and immunology from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He then pursued his Ph.D. in the field of metabolomics and its application in neurodegenerative disease, namely Alzheimer's disease. His current interest is studying the effects of dietary intervention; intermittent fasting, as a means to mitigate the progress of Alzheimer's. As the application of such intervention is wide-ranging on other forms of diseases, he would love to foster a connection with like-minded researchers on the subject.

MOHD AMIR KAMARUZZAMAN is a lecturer from the Department of Anatomy, UKM Medical Centre, 56000 Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. He obtained his medical degree (M.D) in Universitas Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. Having a great passion for teaching and conducting research, he decided to join the Anatomy Department after several years of working experience in clinical services. His area of expertise is in natural products and oxidative stress. With a good knowledge of Human Anatomy and related research interest, his contribution to this book would provide understandable information on metabolic syndrome.
