This color laboratory guide aims to provide a brief, reader-friendly visual guide to microscopy, with photographs, tables, and algorithms of basic laboratory techniques. It is intended to fulfill the need for a simple approach to understanding the principles and concepts of medical microbiology laboratory practice, particularly for beginners in the field. The contents cover general principles in clinical microbiology, immunology, mycology, virology, and the approach for organism identification, as well as clinical syndromes and infections by organs or body systems. The aetiological agents of various infections given are the most common examples and are not exhaustive. The basic understanding involves the concepts of microscopy and staining. steps in specimen processing, culture and identification of organisms, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The algorithms and flow of testing may also vary, depending on the institutional setup. Rapid and continued expansion in diagnostic technology, medical knowledge, and new antimicrobial therapies for infectious diseases lead to evolving laboratory applications, encompassing areas in diagnostics, research, and therapeutics. This book is a product of a tremendous effort by members of the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, UKM. We hope this book will provide a useful guide to those training, teaching, and working in related fields.
